Police are denying a Kaieteur News report that a member of the force had been detained and questioned in connection with the shooting deaths of brothers Lennox and Ron Baker.

Both men, who were minibus operators, were shot dead early last Friday morning on the Vergenoegen Public Road, East Bank Essequibo, while transporting passengers to Parika. Police have denied assertions by the family that a policeman was involved in the shooting.

The shooting occurred at approximately 1:45 a.m. when the men stopped to allow a passenger to disembark the minibus, BHH 8685, on which Lennox Baker was the driver and Ron Baker the conductor.

According to reports, before the bus could take off, two men who are believed to have been trailing the Bakers approached from the rear of the vehicle and opened fire on the men.

The gunmen who were reportedly travelling in a white car then sped away from the scene.

An autopsy was performed on the bodies of the men yesterday. Lennox, 45, died of a single gunshot wound to the neck. The bullet entered and exited the right side of his neck and he died at the scene, almost instantaneously. Ron sustained a gunshot wound to the left eye and died at about 5 am after he had been transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Police spokesman David Ramnarine told Stabroek News yesterday that although investigations into the incident are continuing, investigators have yet to uncover any tangible leads.

Ramnarine, when asked if any members of the Police Force were detained and questioned in relation to the double murder, dispelled such reports, as suggested by the Kaieteur News.

“No policemen have been detained or questioned in relation to the shooting of the brothers,” he said.
