Barbados’ Kevin Farley and Guyana’s Jody Ann Blake were crowned junior boys and girls champions respectively as the 10th annual Caribbean table tennis championships climaxed Saturday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.

Blake, who spearheaded Guyana to the girls team title captured three individual titles to be crowned most outstanding female player of the championships.

In an all Bajan affair, Farley a previous winner of the junior boys title in 2001 in Trinidad, came from 1-2 down against the talented and super-cool, Anderson Carrington last year’s runner-up to score a 4-2 win. Farley triumphed 11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-4, 11-9.

The final was a highly tactical affair marked by flashes of brilliance from both players.

For Carrington it was his backhand loops which flashed with a brilliance all its own and had his forehand not let him down the match could have had a different result.

For Farley, it was his clever serves and his strong, consistent forehand loops and he ended the contest with a cheeky forehand loop from the backhand corner that left Carrington flat-footed.

In the semi-finals Guyana last remaining hope Michael Waithe was beaten by Farley 11-5, 11-7, 11-73-11, 11-9 while in the other semi-final Carrington got past his `coach’ Jade Padmore who was later to be in his corner in the boys final.

While the boys final was tactical the girls was brutal as Blake’s strong forehand loops and heavy backspin serves dominated. Michelle John, just back from Cuba where she captured four medals was unbeaten since her return. But she found and older, stronger and in table tennis terms a more wise Jody Ann Blake waiting at the other end and lost in straight games 11-3, 11-3, 11-9 11-3.

Saturday night was not her night but none who saw her play has any doubt that she will climb that podium someday.

Guyana came up short in the boys doubles final where Waithe and Sankar despite some outstanding play lost to Farley and Carrington 11-8, 5-11, 11-9, 11-6.

But they won the girls doubles final for their second individual title of the championships when Blake and Vida Moore defeated John and Delicia Cummings in another all Guyana affair winning 11-8, 11-8, 11-6.

Blake earned her third title of the championships when she teamed up with Waithe to defeat Carrington and Sherry Felix of Barbados, 11-9, 11-3, 12-10, 13-11, 11-7, 11-7.

Sean Stanley and Carl Sealy won the over-35 doubles beating Nasrudeen Asgaralli and Bob Roopnarine 3-1 while Michael Vieira and Donald Duff won the over-40 doubles from Verna Edwards and Asgaralli 3-1.

Vieira and Bruce Murray team up to win the over 50 doubles defeating M. Persaud and L. Yaw 3-1.The over-35 singles was won by Carl Sealy who defeated Duff 3-2 while Asgaralli won the over 40 singles from Sealy winning 3-1.
