Guyana’s boys and girls opened their account in the Western Union/Supligen Caribbean Junior Squash Championships team competition on a winning note yesterday at the Georgetown Club.

The local boys team thrashed their OECS counterparts 5-0 while the lasses defeated Bermuda 4-1. The boys team were down to face Jamaica last evening.

For the boys, Gerard Greaves trounced Dominique Rivers 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 in an under-19 fixture. In the same age group, Ryan Farnum disposed of Jason Lang, beating him 9-0, 9-0, 9-3.

Kristian Jeffrey beat Marlon James 9-1, 9-3, 9-0 in an under-15 match, while Damien DaSilva defeated Shane Slater 9-1, 9-3, 9-1 and Raphael de Groot edged Diarra Venner 9-1, 6-9, 8-10, 9-6, 9-5.

In the girls match, Guyana’s Dominique Dias suffered the only defeat. She lost 2-9, 8-10, 1-9 to Laura Robinson, while there were victories for Kristina and Andrea King, the individual under-17 and under-19 champions.

Because Bermuda could only field a three-member team instead of a five-member one, Guyana won the other two games by default, thus a 4-1 victory.

Kristina beat Kathy Lennox 9-0, 9-1, 9-3, while Andrea defeated Jessica Mitchell 9-2, 9-6, 9-1.

In the Dias versus Robinson encounter, Dias won the first two points but thereafter, Robinson took command and was all over Dias, playing some beautifully timed backhand shots mixed with soft touches on the forehand that caught Dias flat footed most of the times.

Game two saw Robinson taking the score to 5-0 before Dias scored her first of eight points. With the score at 8-5 and game ball to serve, Dias made the first of four consecutive mistakes that cost her the game.

In Game three, Dias scored first but was left as though standing and like the first game, she (Dias) was caught flat footed on many occasions.

The first game of the Kristina King versus Lennox affair saw King serving first. She never lost a point or the serve. She was all over Lennox who appeared not to have an answer for the powerful backhand shots that ricocheted from the side to the front wall leaving Lennox standing or struggling at the rear of the court.

In the second game, Kristina lost the service on three occasions but still managed to control the fast pace game.

In the third game, Kristina slackened her grip on Lennox a bit, making some simple mistakes that the Bermudian capitalised on.

Andrea on the other hand started off in a flurry and won eight points before Mitchell got of the mark. After losing two consecutive points, Andrea won the game ball and went on to win the game.

Game two saw Andrea moving to a 6-1 lead before Mitchell scored three consecutive points (4-6). Andrea, however, proved her class and went on to win.

It was even more easy in the third game where Mitchell appeared as though she had given up the fight.

In other results from yesterday, Jamaica boys defeated their counterparts from the Bahamas 5-0 through victories from Brad Low over Chad Rolle (9-0, 9-0, 9-1), Michael Anderson over Delano Ferguson (9-1, 9-1, 9-1), David Patterson over Scott Jupp (9-0, 9-0, 9-0), Chris Binnie over Cliff Bodie (9-4, 9-1, 9-6) and Adam Hugh over Glenardo Smith (9-7, 9-4, 9-1).

Bermuda boys edged Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 through victories from individual under-19 champion James Stout who defeated Alister Van Sertima 9-1, 9-0, 9-0, Andrew Robinson defeated Andrea Richards 9-0, 9-1, 9-0 and Michael Shrubb beat Adrian Dyer 9-1, 9-0, 9-2.

Trinidad’s victories came from Josh Pinnard who defeated Robert Maycock 9-7, 9-2, 9-6 and Justin Sanguinette who beat Robert Forbes 9-7 and 6-9 before he (Forbes) lost the third by default.
