After a night of major upsets, Guyana was certain of at least two titles and secured places in three other finals when the Western Union/Supligen Caribbean Junior Squash Championships continued in Georgetown on Sunday night.

Playing in the boys under-17 division, Stanley Marcus Jr created a major upset by disposing of number two seed Rhett Cumberbatch of Barbados (Bar), winning 9-6, 9-5, 9-2, while in the boys under-19 division, Lindener, Gerard Greaves upstaged his compatriot and number two seed Ryan Farnum, beating him 9-5, 7-9, 9-3, 9-1 to reach the final.

Another upset came in the girls under-17 division where Nadia McCarthy (Bar) came from one game down to beat number one seed Chantelle Day of the Cayman Islands (Cay) 7-9, 9-5, 9-4, 9-5.

Marcus was down to take on his compatriot and number one seed Damien DaSilva in the final last night. DaSilva in his semi-final match, made light work of Bermuda’s (Ber) Michael Shrubb, beating him 9-7, 9-0, 9-0.

Last night’s final was expected to be keenly contested since when the two last met in the play-off to select the local team, Marcus won two games but eventually lost 2-3 in a cliff hanger.

The other all Guyanese final (girls under-19) was due to be contested between Tiffany Solomon and Andrea King who both won three games each in a five-player round robin play-off.

Other locals to reach last night’s finals were siblings Daina King (girls under-13) and Kristina King (girls under-17).

Greaves was down to face number one seed James Stout (Ber) in was expected to be a keenly contested match. Stout who is the only professional player at this championships campaigns in Belgium. He brushed aside Jamaica’s (Jam) Brad Low in three straight games, winning 9-0, 9-1, 9-0.

This game also was much anticipated since the ever improving Greaves had beaten DaSilva in the national senior championships a few weeks ago.

Daina King, the number two seed in the girls under-13 division beat her cousin Keisha Jeffrey 9-0, 9-4, 9-2, and was down to meet number one seed Cheri-Ann Parris (Bar) who trounced OECS’s Sherina Slater 9-0, 9-1, 9-2 in the other semi-final.

Kristina King on the other hand defeated her compatriot Chantell Fernandes 9-4, 9-4, 9-3 in a fast paced game. Kristina was slated to meet McCarthy last night.

In the Marcus versus Rhett Cumberbatch encounter, the Guyanese came out playing some beautiful shots that caught the impatient Cumberbatch flat footed.

There were times when Marcus tightened his game causing Cumberbatch to go for shots that were not there.

In game two, there was one long rally between the two players but just after, Cumberbatch made three consecutive points that cost him the game.

Overall, Marcus looked the better player in every aspect of the game.

In other semi-final results, boys under-15 number one seed Bryant Cumberbatch (Bar) beat Guyana’s Kristian Jeffrey 9-0, 9-3, 9-3 and was down to face Chris Binnie (Jam) who beat Robert Maycock (Ber) 9-6, 9-3, 10-9.

Boys under-13 number one seed Justin Sanguinette of Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) defeated Akil Ross (Bar) 6-9, 9-3, 9-5, 9-7 and was scheduled to meet Alain Mundeen (Cay) who beat number two seed Raphael DeGroot (Guy) 10-8, 9-1, 7-9, 9-0.

In the girls category, under-15 number one seed Bo Harris (Bar) defeated Kristine Bell (Jam) 9-, 9-4, 9-5 and was slated to meet Laura Robinson (Ber) in last night’s final. Robinson beat Tessa Martin (T&T) 9-4, 9-0, 9-2.

Today being a rest day, the team championships will commence tomorrow.

Guyana is the defending girls champion, while Barbados is the boys and overall team defending champion.
