President of the Malteenoes Cricket Club (MCC) Edward Richmond is of the opinion that Guyana and West Indies selectee Indomattie Goordial, who hails from the same village as Shivnarine Chanderpaul, is the female equivalent of the West Indies middle-order batsman.

Richmond in a telephone interview with Stabroek Sport said that he felt elated that the young woman has been selected to represent the West Indies. He related that Goordial is a very disciplined individual who has a far way to go in the game.

The president added that Indomattie is a very good all-round player who bats, bowls and fields well. Richmond also mentioned that Goordial is always courteous and is a very likeable person. He disclosed that she has excelled at her CXC examinations passing a number of subjects.

According to Richmond, the Unity resident possesses some very good personal attributes and she will be a good ambassador for the club and Guyana.

The president mentioned that the club was living up to its long tradition of rewarding outstanding and talented athletes by presenting Goordial with a set of cricket gear at the club’s headquarters on Tuesday.

He stated that Goordial is the first female cricketer from the club to have reached such `heights’ and members of the club felt that she deserved some sort of assistance.

Women cricketers especially, are encouraged to be members of the club according to Richmond because they are only required to pay a meager $100 per month to be a member of the club.

For several years now females have been regular participants in the Malteenoes Cricket Academy which is usually held during the August school vacation.

Goordial and Candacy Atkins left Guyana yesterday to join the other members of the West Indies women’s team preparing for the Women’s World Cup later this year.
