Stanley Marcus Jr. pulled off the first upset of the Broadband Wireless sponsored, National Senior Squash Championships by defeating Gerard Greaves in an exciting five game encounter at the Georgetown Club on Thursday night.

Pre-tournament favourite and defending champion Shawn Badrinauth made light work of Medharishi Ramdhani in his (Badrinauth) first game of the championships.

In the Marcus versus Greaves match, Marcus who has made tremendous strides over the past year or so, won the first game 9-2, but Greaves came into his own in the second and made Marcus work really hard for every point he won. However, Greaves pulled it off 10-8 to level the score.

Greaves kept his momentum going and surged ahead in the third, winning it (9-2) quite comfortably.

Game four and five saw a more determined Marcus taking the court. He executed some really exciting shots which Greaves had no answer for. In the end, Marcus came out on top by 9-2, 9-3 margins.

In other results, Badrinauth disposed of Ramdhani in three sets, winning 9-0, 9-2, 9-0.

Former men’s champion Regan Pollard also recorded a comfortable victory. He defeated Andy Gouveia 9-1, 9-3, 9-0 in a second round fixture.

Canadian based Guyanese Julian Chin who registered a 3-0 victory over Raphael DeGroot on the opening night, secured a walk over from David Fernandes on Thursday night and was down to face Jerry Bell last evening.

Ryan Farnum who enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 victory over Randy Hope in round one action on Wednesday, was extended by the more senior (in age) Stanley Marcus Snr. in round two. Farnum however came out on top, winning 10-8, 9-6, 9-4.

After losing the first game 6-9, Bell stormed back to beat the young talented Kristian Jeffrey 9-6, 9-4, 9-3.

Dennis Dias secured his second victory of the tournament by getting past Joe Mekdeci 6-9, 9-6, 9-5, 9-1. Dias had beaten Javid Rahaman in straight sets on the opening night.

Robert Fernandes who lost to Badrinauth in the men’s final last year, defeated Alex Gouveia 9-3, 9-2, 9-7 l on Thursday night and was billed to tackle Stanley Marcus Jnr last night.

Badrinauth was down to take on Farnum last night, while Pollard was slated to face Dias.

Defending ladies champion Denise Jeffrey will have to get past her sister Kathy Shuffler (#2 seed) and her nieces Andrea (#4 seed) and Kristina King (#3 seed) if she is to retain her title.

Guyana will host the Junior Caribbean Championships later this month, while the Senior Caribbean Championships will be held in Barbados next month.
