No upsets were recorded in the first round of the 2003 Broadband Wireless sponsored-National Squash Championships which got underway on Wednesday night at the Georgetown Club.

The championships which has attracted players from Everest, Georgetown Club and Linden, as well as overseas based Guyanese players, will conclude on Sunday at the same venue with the men’s and women’s singles finals.

The defending champions in the men’s and ladies categories are; Shawn Badrinauth and Denise Jeffrey respectively. The two who are the number one seeds in their respective categories, are favoured to make successful defenses of their titles.

However, Badrinauth is expected to receive strong challenges from Robert Fernandes, Regan Pollard and Canadian based Julian Chin, while Jeffrey will have to get past her sister Kathy Shuffler (#2 seed) and her nieces Andrea (#4 seed) and Kristina King (#3 seed) if she is to retain her title.

In results from Wednesday night’s action among the men, Medharishi Ramdhani defeated Marvin Dannett 9-2, 6-9, 9-2, 9-6, while Ryan Farnum trounced Randy Hope 9-0, 9-1, 9-0.

Everest’s Jerry Bell, more known for his exploits on the hockey field, trashed Nelsion Nurse 9-0, 9-0, 9-0, while Damian Fernandes beat Tariq Williams 9-6, 9-7, 9-7.

Chin warmed up against Raphael DeGroot with a 9-3, 9-6, 9-1 victory, while Dennis Dias and Stanley Marcus Jr both blanked their respective opponents Javid Rahaman and Shane Samuell by 9-0, 9-0, 9-0 margins.

Andy Gouveia, Joe Mekdeci and Alex Gouveia all secured walk over victories from Clement McEwan, Damien DaSilva and Peter DeGroot respectively.

Guyana is scheduled to contest the Senior Caribbean Championships in Barbados in next month.
