Guyana beat Jamaica 4-1 to defend Men’s team title

GUYANA beat Jamaica 4-1 to reach the final, to defend the Men’s team title against powerhouse Bermuda in the 14th Mount Gay Caribbean Squash Championships in progress in Barbados.

In the other Men’s team semifinal on Thursday, Bermuda expectedly disposed of Barbados with a 5-0 whipping. The Barbadians will now meet Jamaica in the third place play-off.

Barbados, however, defeated Guyana twice, 4-1 in the Ladies’ Round Robin tie and 2-1 in the Veterans’ tie.

The order of play for the Men’s semifinals was 3, 4, 1, 5, 2 in the ranking of players. Robert Fernandes gave Guyana an early lead, after a five-game battle with Warren Burrowes. The Guyanese trailed in the match, losing the first game 9-10, but levelled the score in the second 9-5. He again was at a disadvantage, losing the third 6-9, but carried the match to a fifth-game decider, taking the fourth 9-1. He won the decider 9-3.

However, Jamaica came back to level the tie, when Julian Chin went down to Bruce Levy in straight games 5-9, 9-10, 5-9.

Max Weithers gave back Guyana the advantage, beating James Bullock 9-5, after which the Jamaican retired injured. Regan Pollard sealed victory in the following match, putting away Craig Mair in straight games 9-2, 9-3, 9-7. Thus Shawn Badrinauth’s match against Wayne Burrowes was only academic, which Badrinauth won in straight games 9-6, 9-1, 9-4.

Bermuda’s players defeated all the Barbadian opponents in straight games, to meet Guyana in today’s final.

Thomas Sherratt defeated Marlon White 10-9, 9-0, 9-1 then James Stout put away John Cumberbatch, conceding just two point 9-1, 9-1, 9-0. When Gary Plumstead beat Andy Gill 9-0, 9-0, 9-3, he sealed Bermuda’s place in the final, thus Sam Stevens’ defeat of Rhett Cumberbatch 9-1, 9-0, 9-1 and Nick Kyme’s win over Shawn Simpson 9-7, 9-0, 9-3 were only academic victories.

Nicolette Fernandes registered the only win in the Ladies’ tie against Barbados, beating Karen Meakins in straight games 9-5, 9-1, 9-1. Barbados registered all straight games wins in the others. Sonia Perkins defeated Kathy Shuffler 9-1, 9-0, 91, Jennifer Armstrong put away Andrea King 9-3, 9-1, 9-3, Lilianna White overcame Kristina King 9-6, 9-3, 10-8 and Tracy Roett defeated Tiffany Solomon 9-6, 9-4, 9-6.

Elizabeth Johnson in straight games 9-1, 9-0, 9-2 in the Ladies’ Over-40 match. The Men’s Over-50 match went to Leon Truss beating Ian McDavid in straight games 9-2, 9-1, 9-6 and in the Men’s Over-40, Nigel Griffith defeated Alwyn Callender in four In the Veterans Teams Round Robin, Colleen Braithwaite had the lone win for Guyana against Barbados, disposing of games 1-9, 9-4, 9-6, 9-4.
