Guyana suffer losses in team competition

GUYANA suffered opening losses in the Ladies’ and Veterans’ competitions on day one of the team competition of the 14th Mount Gay Caribbean Squash Championships in progress in Barbados on Monday.

The locals went down to Jamaica in both categories, the Ladies losing 1-4 and the Veterans 1-2. Jamaica completed victory in all categories when they beat Venezuela in the Men’s team 4-1. Trinidad & Tobago wrapped up the morning fixtures beating the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States in a Veterans tie. In the afternoon’s Men’s team fixtures, Barbados edged out the OECS 3-2.

In the Jamaica/Guyana Veterans, Allwyn Callender picked up a win in the Over-50 Men’s, beating Eddie De Pass in four games after dropping the first game 4-9, 9-5, 10-8, 9-0. But Ian McDavid went down to Patrick Chin in straight games 3-9, 1-9, 0-9 in the Men’s Over-40 match and Colleen Braithwaite won the first game 9-1 but conceded the others 7-9, 7-9, 4-9.

Tiffany Solomon won Guyana’s only match in the Ladies’ team against Jamaica, beating Michelle Hamilton 10-9, 4-9, 10-8, 3-9, 9-5.

Nicolette Fernandes took Merlene West to five games, leading the Caribbean Singles champion at one stage, before losing, 2-3. West won the first game 9-7 but Fernandes bounced back to level the score, winning the second 9-7 and went ahead by winning the third convincingly, 9-1. But West, like a true champion, bounced back to level the score, winning the fourth 9-5 and the deciding game 9-3.

Kathy Shuffler did not win a point against Karen Anderson in two games then retired while Andrea King went down in straight games to Dingle Spence 4-9, 6-9, 1-9 and Kristina King bowed to Melissa Lue after four games 5-9, 1-9, 9-7, 9-10.

Men,s Team - Jamaica won Venezuela, 4-1

James Bullock (Jamaica) defeated Hernan Marino (Venezuela) 3-0 (9-4, 9-7, 9-7),

Wayne Burrowes (Jamaica) disposed of Alberto Valecillo (Venezuela) 3-0 (9-4, 9-0, 9-0), Warren Burrowes (Jamaica) put away Luis Hernandes (Venezuela) 4-1 (9-3, 10-8, 6-9, 9-3), Chris Binnie (Jamaica) overcame Alexander Kassab (Venezuela) 3-2 (3-9, 6-9, 9-3,10-8, 9-7), while Craig Mair (Jamaica) lost to Alvaro Argenzo (Venezuela) 3-0 (9-6,9-6,9-0).

Barbados edged out OECS 3-2.

Gavin Cumberbatch (Barbados) overcame Charlie Sonson (OECS) 3-2 (9-6, 4-9, 7-9, 9-7, 9-5), Andy Gill (Barbados) lost to James Bentick (OECS) 3-1 (7-9, 9-7, 9-0, 9-4), Shawn Simpson (Barbados) defeated Gabby Rabess (OECS) 3-0 (9-5, 9-6, 9-5), Marlon White (Barbados) put away Paul Cyrus (OECS) 3-0 (9-7, 9-2, 9-0) and John Cumberbatch (Barbados) lost to Jason Noon (OECS) 3-2 (9-5, 9-5, 8-10, 6-9, 7-9).

Veterans Team - Trinidad beat OECS, 2-1

Ladies’ Over 40: Michelle Cornelliac (T&T) lost to Sherian Slater (OECS) 1-3 (9-3, 2-9, 8-10, 1-9), Men’s Over 50: Lewis Smith (T&T) defeated John Osman (OECS) 3-0 (10-9, 9-5, 9-2), Men’s Over 40: John Holley (T&T) defeated Colin Alexander (OECS) 3-0 (9-1, 9-5, 9-1).

Guyana were due to meet OECS in the Men’s team and Veterans’ team, yesterday morning, along with Trinidad & Tobago coming up against Venezuela in the Men’s team. In the afternoon, Barbados were pitted against Trinidad & Tobago in the Ladies’, and in the Veterans, Jamaica were due to face Bermuda in the Men’s team.

Today, Guyana will be playing in the afternoon, coming up against Barbados in the Men’s team, while Jamaica will meet Trinidad & Tobago in the Ladies’ and Veterans’ teams.

In the morning session, Jamaica will clash with Trinidad & Tobago and Bermuda will face Venezuela, both in the Men’s teams, while Barbados will take on the OECS in a Veterans fixture.
