Two gold medals likely for local squash players

DAMIEN Da Silva moved closer to successfully defending his Boys Under-17 title, meeting compatriot Stanley Marcus Jr in the final, assuring Guyana at least one gold medal in the Western Union/Supligen Caribbean Junior Squash Championships in progress here.

Also, Guyana are assured of another gold in the Girls Under-19, with Tiffany Solomon and Andrea King playing unbeaten in three matches of the round Robin format. They were due to face each other in their final match, last night. Jamie Galt (Trinidad and Tobago) is behind with two wins.

But Guyana could grab no less than a silver in five categories, with Gerard Greaves in the Boys Under-19 final, Kristina King in the Girls Under-17 and Daina King in the Girls Under-13.

The other two silver will come from the Boys Under-17 and Girls Under-19.

Sunday night in the semi-finals, Da Silva conceded points only in the first game to easily disposed of Michael Shrubb (Bermuda), 9-7, 9-0, 9-0, while opponent in the final Marcus beat Rhett Cumberbatch (Barbados), 9-6, 9-5, 9-2.

On the Under-19 court, Greaves dropped one game in knocking out compatriot Ryan Farnum, 9-5, 7-9, 9-3, 9-1, to set up the final clash with James Stout (Bermuda) who lost one point in beating Brad Low (Jamaica), 9-0, 9-1, 9-0.

Defending champions Bryant Cumberbatch (Barbados) knocked out Guyana’s only player in the Boys Under-15, beating Kristian Jeffrey, 9-0, 9-3, 9-3, opponent in the final, Chris Binnie (Jamaica), 9-6, 9-3, 10-9.

It was repeat in the Boys Under-13, when Alain Mudeen (Cayman) defeated Raphael De Groot, 10-8, 9-1, 7-9, 9-0. The other finalist, Justin Sanguinette (Trinidad) beat Akil ross (Barbados), 6-9, 9-3, 9-5, 9-7.

In the Girls Under-19 rounds, Solomon took care of Galt, 9-2, 10-9, 9-2, while King put away Jessica Mitchell (Bermuda), 9-4, 9-2, 9-0.

Kristina King burst into the Under-17 final, beating compatriot Chantelle Fernandes, 9-4, 9-4, 9-3, while opponent in the final, Nadia Mc Carthy (Barbados) dropped the first game, eventually triumphing over Chantelle Day (Cayman), 7-9, 9-5, 9-4, 9-5.

On the Under-13 court, Daina King beat compatriot Keisha Jeffrey, 9-0, 9-4, 9-2, to next meet Cheri-Ann Parris (Barbados) who turned back Sherina Slater (OECS), 9-0, 9-1, 9-2.

Bo Harris (Barbados) defeated Kristina Bell (Jamaica), 9-7, 9-4, 9-5, for a place in the Girls Under-15 final, while opponent Laura Robinson (Bermuda) disposed of Tessa Martin (Trinidad), 9-4, 9-0, 9-2.

All finals were fixed for last night at Georgetown Club, including the plates, the competition for first round losers. Today is rest day and the team competition starts tomorrow.
