President Bharrat Jagdeo told reporters yesterday that he received a positive response from CARICOM leaders on the issue of harassment of Guyanese by immigration officials at ports of entry in the Caribbean.

The President at a press conference yesterday said he raised the matter at the recently concluded Heads of Government meeting in Jamaica and received a favourable response at the meeting, noting that the communiqué issued at the conclusion of the meeting was reflective of the matter.

The Prime Minister of Barbados has even agreed to the presence of Guyanese immigration officials in Barbados to ensure that Guyanese nationals are treated with respect and courtesy.

Local immigration officials are currently being identified to go to Barbados for this purpose, the President.

He noted that Guyanese have been and are making contributions to countries within CARICOM in various professional and other fields, and as such they must be treated with dignity and respect. Immigration officials must not assume that Guyanese “intend to break the law” because of their “looks,’ he stressed, adding that: “I will not rest until it is addressed.”
