Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Harripersaud Nokta, says engineers are currently in Lethem to assess the damage that has been done to the Moco Moco Hydroelectric Plant, following last Monday’s landslide in the community.

In a comment to the Chronicle yesterday Nokta said he would not put a time frame as to when the Plant would get back into operation, as that would depend upon the findings of the engineers findings.

He also said that engineers are working on the standby generating set which has been down because of a burnt coil which has been sent to neighbouiring Brazil to be rewound.

The coil is expected back today and the minister assured that as soon the coil is back every effort will be made to put the generator into operations as quickly as possible.

When it gets back into operation an assessment would be made to determine whether it has the capacity to deliver the required power, Nokta said, adding that if it does not have the capacity then consideration would be given to providing additional power.

Asked what has been the response of the affected community Nokta said residents have been understanding, as they realise that the problem has been created because of a natural disaster.

The matter came up for discussion in the National Assembly last Wednesday when Ms. Shirley Melville moved that it should be included in the agenda.

Both the Prime Minister Sam Hinds and Nokta assured the House that the matter was being treated with a sense of urgency.
