Lester Sealey, secretary of the newly elected executive of the Georgetown Football League (GFL) is adamant that the body was duly elected when elections were held a few weeks ago.

Sealey at the time was responding to an article which appeared in this newspaper (SN 2003-05-20) which quoted a “usually reliable” source as saying that the GFL had been outlawed by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF).

According to the secretary, prior to the elections, clubs affiliated to the GFL were written to informing them of a general council meeting which was held and which mandated the holding of elections at the said time.

Sealey explained that the required number of representatives were present at the GFC pavilion when the elections were held and this was a key ingredient needed to elect the body.

The returning officer for the elections was Sydroy Nedd.

The secretary revealed that representatives from Santos, Fruta Conquerors, Camptown, Western Tigers, Beacon, Pele, GFC, Alpha United, Thomas United, Uprising and University of Guyana were present at the elections for office bearers.

The secretary pointed out that it is now customary for the GFF to nit-pick and look for a different excuse to ridicule the GFL ever since the Millennium Executive was removed from office.

Sealey said that it is disgusting that the GFF is now saying that the GFL has not followed directives given to the body.

He said that the GFF is setting double standards because the same directives that the GFF are issuing they are guilty of disregarding.

The secretary also made reference to the election of a former member of the Millennium Executive and said that he was nominated by the members for the current post.

He added that if the members thought he was unfit for the post then they would not have nominated him.

Sealey also alluded to the fact that the current treasurer of the GFF also sought election to the now “outlawed” GFL.

The secretary said that it was hilarious because if he (the treasurer) knew that the GFL would have been deemed outlawed then he should have exercised his democratic right to decline his nomination to the body in the first instance.

Sealey claims that it seems that because the treasurer did not get elected to the GFL that might be a frivolous reason why the GFF has sought to diminish the GFL’s status.

Sealey feels that the article was very mischievous and would like the GFF to publicly state its official position on this issue.
