Kristina King edged long time rival Chantelle Fernandes 3-2 in the girls under-17 final of the 2003 Woodpecker Products sponsored-Junior National Squash Championships which came to an exciting conclusion on Sunday afternoon at the Georgetown Club.

Both King and Fernandes have built a reputation for producing very close, high quality, exciting matches and Sunday’s encounter was no exception.

King came out blazing to take the first game 9/4 but Fernandes leveled the match by taking the next game by an identical score.

The two players were neck and neck in the third game which lasted for about twenty minutes before Fernandes squeezed through 9/7. T

That effort seemed to take too much out of Fernandes and King gained the upper hand to once again prove her class as she took the last two games 9/2, 9/5.

King also copped the most outstanding player award for winning both the under-17 and under-19 titles, while Alanna Gonsalves was awarded the sportsmanship medal.

In the under-19 final, Kristina King beat Andrea King, while Tiffany Solomon finished third.

Marvin Dannett was also presented with a racquet by former national champion Regan Pollard for being the best new player of the tournament.

In other championship results, Keisha Jeffrey won the girls under-11 title from Kayla Jeffrey and Ashley Lall respectively, while on the distaff side, Alex Arjoon beat Jason Khalil to take the boys version. Deje Dias placed third.

Daina King beat Dominique Dias in both the girls under-13 and under-15 divisions. Keisha Jeffrey finished third in the under-13 age group, while Chelsea Fung placed third in the under-15 division.

Raphael DeGroot beat Alex Arjoon for the boys under-13 title while Nicholas Narain placed third. However, in the under-15 division, DeGroot had to settle for third behind Kristian Jeffrey and Peter DeGroot who finished first and second respectively.

In the boys under-17 age group, Peter DeGroot came out on top over Ingram Edwards and Javid Rahaman respectively.

The boys under-19 division was won by Kristian Jeffrey who beat Marvin Dannett in the final. Ingram Edwards placed third.
