The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has released sufficient funds to effect the payment of pensions and Public Assistance for the month of May.

Payments had been suspended due to the lack of funds, according to the Guyana Post Office Cor-poration (GPOC), the agency which cashes the pension vouchers. But Social Security Minister Bibi Shadick had refuted the GPOC’s claims, stating that it was negligence on the GPOC’s part that accounted for the delay. Pensioners receive a stipend of $1820 per month.

Chief Social Worker, Orville Stuart told this newspaper yesterday that on Monday the Ministry had picked up a cheque from the Ministry Of Finance which would cover pension payments for this month. Stuart confirmed that pensioners had begun receiving their money except for those who lived in interior locations.

He said their payments would begin coming through by Monday.

A meeting to resolve the payment issue was held between officials from the Human Services Ministry and the Post Office.

Details of that meeting have not been disclosed.
