The PPP in a release on the occasion of the 165th anniversary of the arrival of East Indians in Guyana says the main task today is to advance Guyana while preserving its democracy so that all its people can enjoy a better life.

"To achieve this, unity of all our people is vital," the party stated.

According to the release, the PPP is continually working to build a united Guyana since the party believes there is no alternative to this. "Despite the efforts to divide our people by exploiting racial divisions, we are confident that our people would strengthen their unity and advance Guyana," the party said.

It noted also that Guyanese of Indian origin have made a great contribution to the social, political, economic and cultural life of Guyana. And together with other segments of the Guianese population of the then colony, they played a historic part in the fight against colonialism and for independence from Britain, the PPP said. "Subsequently, they also made a sterling contribution in the struggles for a return of democracy and enriched our life and society in so many ways," the party added.
