Roraima Bikers cyclist Tyrone Hamilton struck gold for the West Indies team on Sunday, at the West Indies versus the World Cycling Meet in Trinidad.

According to Roraima Bikers’ team manager John Martins, Hamilton who was selected for the West Indies team by race organiser Michael Phillips of Trinidad, won the Unknown distance event for international riders at the Skinner Park Track in South Trinidad from team mates Carlitos Jones of Barbados and Julio Herrera of Cuba respectively. The latter is a 1999 Pan American Games gold medalist.

Martins said in the unknown distance event, the bell was sounded after the 19th lap.

Hamilton also placed third in international Kerin which was won by Cuba’s Michael Pedrosa. Herrera was second.

In the heats of the flying 200-metre, Hamilton registered the fastest time, but had to settle for fourth. The event was won by Herrera. Trinidad’s Elijah Green was second and Pedrosa third.

Also in winners row was Guyana’s top road rider Dwayne Gibbs who won a 15-lap event for categories one, two, three and junior riders on Saturday at the same venue. Gibbs also finished second in a four-lap event for category one racers. This event was won by Ako Kellar. Grant was third.

Roraima’s Gordon Kennedy placed second in another 15-lap event for categories one, two, three and junior cyclists.

This event was won by Trinidad’s Clinton Grant. Ako Kellar also of Trinidad was second.

Kennedy also placed second in a two-lap event for category two and three riders and third in a six-lap event for the same categories.

Gibbs’ Kaieteur Cycle Club mate, Andrew Reece settled for third in the category one `Win and Out’ event.

Another local, Marlon Williams, was second in a `Devil take the Hindmost’ event for junior riders and third in a five-lap race for the same category of pedal pushers.

Jorge Emmerson who also contested the junior category, placed third in a six-lap race which was won by Trinidad’s top junior Adam Alexander.

Three other local riders - Kelon and John Charles and Royden Bacchus - contesting the series secured a number of fourth and fifth places and will be seeking better fortunes when the Series continue on Friday in Barbados.

The local contingent is expected to travel to Barbados from Trinidad tomorrow.
