Despite a downturn in the travel industry, a seven-member Roraima Bikers cycle team were able to secure sponsorship from Universal Airlines to participate in the West Indies versus the World Cycling Series, which gets underway in Trinidad on April 7.

The locals will also contest the Trinidad Southern Games slated for Skinner Park, South Trinidad, today and tomorrow.

The entire team which winged out for the Twin Island Republic yesterday, received airline tickets from Universal, but will however have to pay their airport and ticket tax.

The team comprises John Charles, Kellon Charles, Gordon Kennedy, Marlon Williams, Jorge Emmerson, Travis Mendonca and John Martins (manager).

Apart from Trinidad and Tobago, the one month cycling Series will be contested in St. Vincent and Barbados as well.

The locals who will be joined by about 12 others from various clubs will be involved in road and track events in all three Islands.

They are expected to come up against some of the best cyclists from around the world, including England, United States, Colombia, France, Denmark, Canada and the Caribbean.

At last year’s meet, Kennedy, Kellon Charles and Williams won 36 medals among them.

At the Southern Games last year, Williams grabbed two bronze, while Kennedy and Kellon Charles won one each.

In the West Indies versus the World Series last year, Williams copped two gold, six silver and three bronze medals, while Kennedy picked up four golds, one silver and three bronze. Kellon Charles on the other hand won a gold, a silver and two bronze medals.
