The Chinese government has confirmed the provision of further financial assistance for the construction of the international conference centre being built at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara.

This was one of two agreements which were recently signed in Beijing by Guyana's Minister of Foreign Trade and International Cooperation Clement Rohee and the Minister of Commerce of China.

The second agreement puts in place a formal bilateral arrangement for the promotion and protection of investments.

This is expected to give a boost to promoting investment and strengthening economic cooperation between Guyana and China, a release from the Guyana Embassy in the Chinese capital said.

The signing of the two agreements was witnessed by President Bharrat Jagdeo, now on a state visit to the People's Republic of China, and Chinese President Hu Jintao at the conclusion of their bilateral talks.

The Guyana leader and his delegation left Beijing on Friday for visits to Guangzhou, Fuzhou and Shanghai, the Government Information Agency said. The State Visit will conclude on Wednesday.

GINA reported that President Jagdeo also had discussions with the President of the Import/Export Bank of China and representatives of companies involved in hydropower and the construction of bridges.

Meanwhile, President Hu has assured that the new Government of China stood ready to work with the Government of Guyana to further strengthen the bilateral ties between the two countries which have developed over the past three decades, the Guyana Embassy said.

The Chinese leader also pledged the support of his government to assist Guyana in restructuring its traditional industries.

President Jagdeo, addressing the challenges facing developing countries in the era of globalization, highlighted the vulnerabilities of small states and stressed in particular the need for special and differential treatment in the international trading system.

And President Hu, the Guyana Embassy further said, acknowledged the importance of such treatment to small developing countries, in particular the lesser developed countries. In this regard he pledged China's continued support for this position to be incorporated into the agreement which would result from the new round of international trade talks.

Jagdeo also reaffirmed his country's stand on the 'One China' policy, while the Chinese leader expressed appreciation for the support which China continues to receive from Guyana on this policy, the Guyana Embassy said.
