Guyana's 2002 Commonwealth Games 400 metres gold medalist Aliann Pompey failed to make it to the final of the World Indoor Athletics Meet in Birmingham, England.

Running in the first of two heats, Pompey who placed second in her first round heat, could do no better than fifth yesterday. She registered 52.74 seconds.

The heat was won by Russia's Natalya Nazaroma who clocked 50.90 seconds. The other top three positions were occupied by Bahamas' Christine Amertil (51.11), Belarus' Svetlana Usovich (52.18) and defending champion, Jamaica's Sandi Richards (52.20).

According to a report from England, both Richards and Pompey were listed as stand byes, but when the list of the finalists were declared, they both failed to make it into today's final.

Great Britain's Jennifer Meadows (53.36) placed sixth in heat one. Heat two was won by Germany's Grit Breuer (51.56). Second place went to Great Britain's Christine Murphy (51.74) while United States' Monique Hennagan (51.89) placed third, and Poland's Grazyna Prokopek (53.07) finished fourth.

The final will be contested by Usovich, Hennagan, Murphy, Amertil, Nazarova and Breuer.

According to a report from England yesterday, Pompey was slated to come up against Usovich, Smith, Hennagan, Murphy and Amertil. Richards, Breuer, Meadows, Williams and Prokopek were listed to contest heat two.
