This week Stabroek News asked the man/woman in the street how they felt about the first-round elimination of the West Indies cricket team from the ICC World Cup in South Africa, and what needed to be done to improve performance.

Maurice Munro - financial analyst: 'I think that the West Indies being eliminated from the World Cup is unfortunate, but the team's problem continues to be consistency in batting and bowling. They tried to make it by batting but the bowling suffered. Collins was left out after the first game. Jermaine Lawson should have been there before. The match we lost to New Zealand we should have won. Unless we could improve our consistency, West Indies cricket will stay in the doldrums.'

Himwattie Bansraj - vendor: 'For the first the team was playing well. After they won their opening game I thought they would go far in the competition. In the game against Sri Lanka, I feel that if Sarwan didn't get hit in his head with the ball, they would have won the game. They should try again. I think that they should have made changes to the opening batsmen for the last few matches. I'm still supporting them. I don't think Carl Hooper should retire; he could play until he reaches his forties.'

Christopher Archer - vendor: 'One thing I could say is that the West Indies team is not playing sensible one-day cricket. It's about conserving on wickets and having good finishing. Even though you have good batting you have to keep the runs coming. I feel too that they should look to play youngsters, whom they should mould, teaching them the game. The young players should also look at televised one-day games. It's all about sensible batting and keeping your wickets intact.'

Mohamed Asgar - fish processor: 'If they had won the game against Sri Lanka, it would have put them in a good position. They need to concentrate more in the game because they get good salaries and many people support them. They should put more effort into the game. The blame should not be put on rain in the game against Bangladesh. In sports you have to expect things like rain.'

Amrit Ramsingh - teacher: 'I think the team lacked tactics. Out of the three matches they won, they batted first in two. When you bat first batsmen are fresh, and bowlers are not doing anything. When you bat last the batsmen are tired. This happened against New Zealand. The only way you bat last is if the pitch is hard. Lara is a good man but he needs to develop team spirit. He did very well in the first match. He is one of the must influential players on the team. If you're influential and not team spirited then you may influence the other players in the same way.'

Mark Melville - security guard: 'For me, the West Indies did a great job in the preliminary round. What should have been done at that stage was team's management sitting down and making some readjustments to the team. In the third game you began to see weakness in bowling. The game against Sri Lanka in which Brian Lara took 20 balls to get off the mark was the downfall. They could have gone to the Super Sixes. Management needs to now sit down and look at the downfalls and hopefully work them out before the start of the Test series against Australia.'

Michael Lynch - salesman: 'Hooper should have used Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Wavell Hinds to open. He should have brought in Marlon Samuels. The team should have been reshuffled and Jermaine Lawson should have been brought in to replace Ricardo Powell. I believe that the team's captain and coach should have more say in terms of who makes the team. Management is very poor.'

Lynden Sandy - salesman: 'Carl Hooper is alright but certain persons on the team have to improve in batting, bowling and fielding. They have got to still put more into it, but I back them winning or losing. West Indies team is a nice team. I like them. Some of the batsmen slacken up sometimes. The team's management had a part to play in the team's bad performance. People should encourage them though, because it's one thing to criticize but on the field it is something different.'

Samantha Profitt - salesgirl: 'It's like when the West Indies win a game, they tell themselves that they 'got it lock' and they throw away the next game. I am disappointed in the captain Carl Hooper because he doesn't dive for balls when fielding. Chris Gayle is OK; he puts much effort into the game. When it comes to batting, they only poke the ball. They have to hit the ball to win games. Everybody on the team seems to depend only on Brian Lara to make runs; they need to pull their own weight. If they had changed the batting order they would have stood a chance.'

Janice Beaton-Shepherd - postal worker: 'First I think they should have played Jermaine Lawson. They should have dropped Chris Gayle and brought in Marlon Samuels from the third match. The West Indies started off well with South Africa; they did an excellent job. In the game with Sri Lanka they should have told Chanderpaul that Sarwan was coming again so that he could have stayed in. If that had been done, I think that they would have won that game. Also the game they lost to New Zealand they should have won.'
