Guyanese can expect to be thoroughly entertained tonight should they choose to grace the Miss Guyana/ Universe pageant with their presence at the National Cultural Centre.

The Miss Guyana/ Universe will be crowned tonight after almost two months of training and the recent competitions.

Two segments, intelligence and swimsuit, have already been concluded and after the evening gown segment tonight the final ten will be named.

Franchise holder, Odinga Lumumba, speaking at a press conference at GTV 11 yesterday said things this year will be much “smoother” than last year.

He said that this year they received more support for the girls with some of them being fully sponsored and others partly sponsored.

He noted that like last year, he has provided clothes, shoes and transportation for the girls along with hairstylists and make-up.

The contestants were responsible for their gym sessions.

The pageant will be graced by Miss Venezuela, Cynthia Lander Zamora, who participated in last year’s Miss Universe pageant and was named in the top five.

Lumumba said they are promoting an event and not only the girls. According to him, there has been an improvement.

And in light of criticisms levelled at the girls after the intelligence segment, Lumumba said they were the best of the lot that came forward.

Next year, Lumumba said, the pageant is expected to be better since Black Entertainment Television in the US has contacted him and promised to be a big part of the event.

He said that tonight the programme will open with the group First Born followed by a dance combination by the National School of Dance, the Henry Rodney Dance Group and the girls themselves.

The contestants will then introduce themselves and following that there will be an entertainment segment and international fashion show.

The girls will also model their swimsuits and there will be more entertainment with Jamaican singer Richie Stevens and other artistes.

The final ten will then be named and they would be serenaded and then questioned on their platforms before the five finalists are named. They would then be asked the same final question before the queen is selected.

Miss Guyana/ Universe, 2002, Mia Rahaman will take her final walk before the new queen is named and then the five finalists will be serenaded.

The queen will then be crowned and the other girls sashed.
