GFF calls up 80 to prepare for Olympic trials

The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) has shortlisted 80 players to commence trials for possible selection on the national Under-23 team to participate in the 2006 Olympic qualifiers.

Thirty players are from Georgetown, 18 from Linden, 10 from Berbice, eight from East Coast Demerara, seven from West Demerara and four each from Bartica and Lethem. The trials will be conducted on Saturday and Sunday at the University of Guyana ground commencing at 7.30 pm each day.

At the end of the trials a 26-member squad will be selected for encampment. A final squad of 18 will be selected which will participate in the qualifying games. The names of Guyana’s opponents and the dates have not yet been released. The Under-23s will be under the eye of Technical Director Brazilian Neider dos Santos.

Those players called to trials are: (Georgetown) Leon Bailey, Rodwell Sandy, Delon Williams, Tone Lopes, Kelvin McKenzie, Walter Moore, Sherwin Cadgonan, Sheik Kamal, Shad Fernandes, Jermain Nurse, Shawn Beveney, Travis Grant, Kanata Mannings, Jermaine Alleyne, Andy Duke, Johnaton Peters, Carlos Grant, Cordell Young, Elton Brown, Mandella Mannings, Gregory Richardson, Michael Oie, Romel Ford, Devon Millington, Shane Adams, Linden Simmonds, Errol Cummings and Kester Alleyne. Linden: Lorenzo Sampson, Steve Brewely, Sheldon Dainty, Howard Watterton, Quacey Johnson, Dale Sauers, Dwayne Fraser, Quincy Peters, O.J. Evans, Sean Brewely, Gordon Adams, Oswald Benjamin, Marvin Hartman, Nigel Price, Selwyn Isaacs, Deon Jordan, Shawn Brown and Fidel Smith. Berbice: Kirt Bristol, Colin Bowry, Osmond Nedd, Alvin Reynolds, Cleon Griffith, Charles Goodluck, Marvin Johnson, Winston Benjamin, Desford Williams and Sean Rose. East Coast Demerara: Linden Dennis, Colin Jones, Kelvin Smith, Richard Joseph, Sheon Robinson, Yonel Price, John Pitt and Dwight Peters. West Demerara: Ike Garraway, Zevon Atkinson, Clement Brown, Terrence Bobb, Lennox Torrington, Marvin Griffith and Jermaine Murray. Bartice: Seon Ferriera, Devon Elias, Sherwin De Silva and Mark Richards. Lethem: Emrick Williams, Peter Parks, Daxton Parks and Jonny Farias.

According to a press release, the Georgetown players are asked to assemble at the National Gymnasium at 7am each day for transportation to the UG ground. The footballers from East Coast and West Demerara are required to be at the UG ground from 7:30 am on each day of the trials. The players from Lethem will join the squad when it is encamped.

The players from Linden, Bartica and Berbice will be housed at the Palace De Leon Hotel.
