The attack by armed gunmen yesterday morning on the Kaieteur News and the burning of their premises must be seen as a direct attack on freedom of the press and on freedom of expression.

In a democratic society people have the right to express their views free from fear and intimidation subject to the laws of libel, sedition and contempt of court. If a person is intimidated from writing or publishing items critical of certain interests, free speech is immediately curtailed. Freedom is indivisible.

We condemn this violent assault on one of the foundation stones of a democratic society, a free press, and call for a full investigation. We offer our sympathy to our fellow publisher.
