`I think things are going fairly well and if we have slippages it is because of the negotiation process. This is all understandable.’ - President Bharrat Jagdeo

(GINA) - THE implementation of the many agreements contained in the Joint Communiqué signed by President Bharrat Jagdeo and the Leader of the People’s National Congress Reform Mr. Robert Corbin on May 6, is moving ahead satisfactorily.

President Bharrat Jagdeo expressed this view during a special television interview on Friday with the Government Information Agency’s (GINA) Beverley Alert.

On June 26, the National Assembly approved the appointment of the members of the Police Service Commission and the Judicial Service Commission.

“So now we can move ahead with the appointment and promotion of Policemen and women and similarly with the judges, as well as focus on disciplinary matters once these Commissions are in place. I appreciate the spirit of collaboration there,” he said.

The President disclosed that he has one dedicated staff who works on the implementation of the Joint Communiqué as well as the Follow-Up Agreement and this individual reports to the Head of the Presidential Secretariat Dr. Roger Luncheon, after interacting with counterparts in the PNC/R.

“There is a process and a mechanism. So if we run into problems for one reason or another in implementing a particular matter that could be dealt with and be resolved at the level of our representatives, given that the Follow-Up mechanism is in place,” the President said.

Meanwhile, President Jagdeo has met his representatives on the Committees for the Depressed Communities Needs.

In the Joint Communiqué, President Jagdeo and Corbin agreed that all projects for the Phase I Communities have been completed and G$60M will be immediately available for Phase II projects.

The Leaders also agreed that the Committee would, within a month, provide a list of depressed communities, from which they would identify those for implementation in Phase 11.

The Committee compiling the ongoing developmental projects in Region Ten has also briefed the President. This single document will be reviewed after compilation.

The President said that although he will be out of the country attending the 24th CARICOM Heads of Government Conference in Jamaica, the Committees will still be required to submit their reports.

“I think things are going fairly well and if we have slippages it is because of the negotiation process. This is all understandable,” he said.

The President reiterated his commitment to the agreements and noted that the success is dependent on both signatories.

“The leadership that Mr. Corbin gives in this process will determine whether these agreements would succeed or not. I am prepared to honour the agreements in the Communiqué, in good faith,” he said.
