THE preliminary findings of a probe conducted by a Board of Inquiry into the discovery of 75 pounds of ‘cannabis savita’ (marijuana) aboard the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) flagship, the GDFS Essequibo, on May 13 last, was yesterday handed over to Chief of Staff (COS) of the Guyana Defence Force, Brigadier General Michael Atherly.

And according to an army source, the COS is likely to make a pronouncement on the report “soon”.

The source pointed out that no determination has been made as yet as to the fate of the three soldiers who are implicated in the drugs find. They remain in detention at Camp Ayangana.

But word is that they will be handed over to the police to face criminal prosecution.

Since the discovery, made one day after the vessel docked in Barbados with a contingent of seven officers and 33 ratings from the GDF Coast Guard to participate in ‘Exercise Tradewind’, a number of persons have been interviewed.

The GDF contingent under the command of Lieutenant Commander Floyd Levi was to have participated in the exercise alongside other Coast Guard units from the Caribbean that make up the seven-nation Regional Security System (RSS) grouping, as well as units from the United States and the United Kingdom.

As a result of the incident, the vessel was recalled to Guyana and the directors of the exercise and other authorities were subsequently notified.

A Lance Corporal attached to the Coast Guard unit who was not part of the contingent and who had absconded from duty was spotted by some crew members as he tried to sneak aboard the vessel, by way of the sea.

The Lance Corporal had flown to the island of Barbados, booked into a hotel close by the sea and awaited the ship’s arrival.

Following his arrest the alleged mastermind, the Lance Corporal, fingered the two other Coast Guard members and a civilian who is still at large.
