PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - A happy West Indies cricket captain Brian Lara has attributed yesterday's 39-run victory over Australia in the fifth One-Day International at the Queen's Park Oval to the regional cricketers achieving their set goals.

"I think it was a team effort. We played very well. We lost an early wicket in the second over. We had targets set for this match and we met every target and we sort of exceeded them," Lara told reporters said in a post-match interview here.

"It was great to see us go out there and perform in the manner that we did. To beat the Australians, they are such a great team and to get one up on them is always a special moment," Lara said.

"In the Test series, we did that. Today (yesterday) we did that in the One-Day series and it is very special. At some point in time, I heard the journalists wondering if they will ever be beaten but One-Day cricket is about who plays better on the day and we did that today," noted Lara.

He said the victory would lift the West Indian players' spirits for the final two matches in Grenada on Friday and Sunday.

"Of course, we will be coming full of confidence in the remaining two games but I'm almost sure the guys realise that Australia are going to be coming very hard.

"They understand that they have lost a game and they will feel hurt about it so we are looking forward to the challenge over the weekend in Grenada.

Again, it is going to be a tall order and hopefully, we are going to be up to the task," Lara said.

Lara admitted he was not happy with the way the team had played in the four previous matches.

"I was disappointed in our performances throughout the One-Day series so far. Today, we got it right. What we need to do is try to keep it as consistent as possible. What is necessary is that we perform well, compete and take them down to the wire. We did that maybe in the first game but not in the other three.

"That's all I'm asking from the guys. If you compete and you play hard, sometimes the results are going to come your way and that's what happened today," Lara reasoned.

The West Indies skipper also conceded that the losses in the preceding four matches were simply "because we are playing against the best team in the world".

"What I am hoping that when we meet the other teams since we have learnt a lot from the Australians is that we perform and beat the other teams. I would be very disappointed then if these things don't happen" Lara said.
