Ministers fan for Independence celebrations

GINA - IN CELEBRATION of Guyana’s 37th Independence Anniversary, the ten administrations have planned cultural activities to be followed by the hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead tonight.

Several Government Ministers will be travelling to the Regions to participate in the activities.

The Minister of Education Dr. Henry Jeffrey will be in Region One (Barima/Waini) to participate in the celebrations, which will be held at the Mabaruma Recreational Park.

The event will start at 19:00 hrs with a video show highlighting development in the various parts of Guyana, prayers, cultural items, skits, dances, chutney singing, military display, followed by the hoisting of the flag at midnight.

Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce Mr. Manzoor Nadir, will be in Region Two (Pomeroon/Supenaam), where he is slated to deliver the feature address. Activities planned by the Region include a musical interlude, inspection of the Guard of Honour, feature address, cultural programme, prayers, Flag Raising and the recitation of the National Pledge/Song. The programme is expected to commence at 20:00 hrs. at the Anna Regina Community Centre Ground.

Minister within the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security, Ms. Bibi Shaddick, will visit Region Three (Essequibo Islands/West Demerara) where the public is assured of a grand programme. Attractions include recitation of the National Pledge, prayers, patriotic song, poem, chutney singing, bottle and fire illusion and calypso singing. This event is expected to begin at 18:00 hrs at the Regional Democratic Council’s Compound, Vreed-en-Hoop.

Minister of Finance Mr. Sasenarine Kowlessar will visit Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice) where the event is expected to begin at 20:00 hrs at the Regional Democratic Council’s Compound at Fort Wellington.

Attractions will include dances, poems, calypso singing, display of cultural and formal wear, prayers and the hoisting of the flag.

Minister of Fisheries, Other Crops and Livestock Mr. Satyadeow Sawh, will be visiting Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne) where he will deliver the feature address on the lawns of the State House, New Amsterdam. The event is expected to commence at 19:00 hrs. featuring songs, cultural presentations, dances, prayers and patriotic songs.

The Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Mr. Harripersaud Nokta, will travel to Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) where he will participate in celebrations beginning at 22:00 hrs at Smart’s Park, Bartica.

Activities in the Region began on May 18, 2003 with the commencement of activities with Interfaith Services at the Roman Catholic Church, First Avenue Bartica. On May 23, the Region will be hosting an `AIDS Lecture and Symposium’ at the Bartica Community Centre Building.

Activities in Region Nine (Upper Takutu/Upper Essequibo) will commence at

19:00 hrs at the Flag Square in Lethem. Activities listed for this event include prayers and remarks by the Regional Chairman Mr. Vincent Henry. The feature address will be delivered by the Minister of Agriculture Mr. Navin Chandarpal followed by the hoisting of the flag and the reading of the National Pledge and Anthem.

Activities in Georgetown will commence at 19:30 hrs at the National Park where His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo, Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and other Government officials will participate in the event. Items planned for this event include cultural presentations to be followed by the hoisting of the Golden Arrowhead.
