PANAMA - IT was raining when Sunday night , at the "La Plaza Centenario del Panama Canal Village" the AIDS International Day Candlelight Vigil took place. The event, which was organized by the Global Health Council, counted with the participation of all Miss Universe delegates who had already arrived by then. After they stepped down from their buses, the candidates were invited to light up a candle and to go on the stage.

When they were all holding their candles, the candidates proceeded to have a seat under a tent, from where they heard with attention the words of Justine Pasek, Miss Universe 2002, Paula Shugart (President of Miss Universe) and Joaquin Jacome (President of the Miss Universe 2003 Host Committee).

Justine spoke about the importance of HIV prevention, and pointed out that everyone should get tested every once in a while. Then she started calling some of the contestants back on stage, now divided in geographical areas, so that she could explain how each region on our planet is doing as far as controlling and dealing with this fatal disease.

She said that the African continent remains the area where most people are tested HIV+. Justine also said that where the disease's incidence grows the most in is the Ukraine.

A moment of silence was then dedicated to all of those who have passed away as victims of AIDS. Most delegates were visibly emotional, and Miss Panama even cried.

It was at this event that the representatives of South Africa, China, Bulgaria, Guyana, Ireland and Australia made their first official presentation.

The only delegate who is still missing is Miss Norway, who has been traveling for the last 72 hours to get to Panama!!!

The heavy and emotional atmosphere at the Plaza Centenario was softened by Panama's band Son Miserables, who got hundreds of locals singing to the lyrics of their songs.

In this special day, it is very important for everyone to take a moment to remind themselves that AIDS is a problem which affects the entire planet, and that, in a way or another, we can give our small contribution to this noble cause.

Meanwhile, the main change concerning the number of semi-finalists in the 2003 Miss Universe pageant has been confirmed.

First, 15 semi-finalists will be called, who will compete in their evening gowns. Only the 10 with the highest scores will advance to the top 10 and the swimsuit competition.

Five finalists will then be picked, and after a final interview, the new Miss Universe and her four runner-ups will be chosen.

Most national directors and contestants we spoke to are very satisfied with these changes in the pageant's format.
