THE Demerara Assizes jury yesterday acquitted Clyde Atwell, who was on trial in the multi-million-dollar robbery case.

He was the lone survivor who faced a three-count indictment following the heist in which notorious Linden London alias ‘Blackie’, Toyin Anderson and Andrew Douglas were also involved on September 22, 1999.

But Anderson and Douglas, who were jointly indicted with Atwell, have since been shot dead, like London, although in different circumstances.

Atwell, who was alone in the dock before Justice Winston Moore, had originally been accused of robbing Robert Haniff and Lachman Mohabeer of cash, including foreign currency and wounding policeman Ewart Hutson called ‘Toots’.

However, at the close of her case, State Prosecutor Simone Morris withdrew the other counts and the jury deliberated only on the one in which Mohabeer was the victim.

Defence Counsel Hookumchand and Morris addressed the jury on Tuesday and Justice Moore delivered a four-hour summation yesterday before the jurors retired for two hours.

Commenting on the outcome, the judge said the jury might have seen something that he did not see.
