ST JOHN’S, Antigua - West Indies captain Brian Lara is hoping to have all his players fit to tackle Australia in what could be a morale-boosting fourth and final Cable and Wireless Test for the Caribbean cricketers at the Antigua Recreation Ground starting here today.

The West Indies, beaten in the first three Tests by Australia, now need to avoid defeat to maintain their distinguished record of never being whitewashed in a home series since they gain Test status in 1928.

“I’ve been caught up with practice myself but I heard about a couple niggles but I can’t confirm it,” Lara told reporters here yesterday when asked about the level of fitness in the regional team.

“Hopefully, the guys who have gone for treatment and are seeking treatment will be a hundred per cent or close as possible tomorrow (today) because we would love to pick our full deck of cards,” Lara said.

Lara pointed out the West Indies have been unable to choose their best line-up in any of the three Tests so far.

“We haven’t done that from day one. In Guyana, we’ve been struggling with different injuries, playing Shiv (Chanderpaul) and Ridley (Jacobs) in the game and after that, we had to have guys come in and play,” Lara noted.

“It’s been a bit tough on it but hopefully we would have everyone looking forward to tomorrow (today),” Lara added.

Jacobs, the experienced wicketkeeper/batsman who missed the last two Tests in Trinidad and Tobago and Barbados with an injured leg, is expected to make a return on his home ground where he scored his second century Test century against India last year.

There was also concern about the fitness of vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, who has a niggling hamstring injury.
