BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - West Indies' captain Brian Lara has joined the list of persons who criticised the Kensington Oval pitch that was used for the third Cable and Wireless Test against Australia.

"I think the pitch came up short. It was not the greatest Test track and really and truly looking at it, I couldn't tell whether it was going to deteriorate so quickly," Lara said after the West Indies suffered a nine-wicket defeat to Australia.

"It was a bit unfortunate that I choose to bowl but I think for a Test pitch to deteriorate that quickly, we got to say something is really wrong with it," added Lara.

Lara admitted it was tough initiation to Test cricket for off-spinning all-rounder Omari Banks of Anguilla and fast bowler Tino Best of Barbados.

"I think it was tough going. After the first 15-20 minutes, the pitch really flattened out and it was always going to be tough for young Best on such a track against a batting line-up like the Australians got," Lara noted.

"I thought Omari represented himself pretty well. This is his first Test match and he bowled okay. He knows that there are going to be areas that he got to improve especially against Test cricketers.

"You play the first-class game and you are going to get away with a few things but in the Test arena," Lara pointed out.

"But I honestly feel that three for 204, may be too many runs for an off-spinner but he has three wickets so that is going to give him the encouragement to go on.

"Also with the bat, he seems to be able to handle himself pretty and so does Best.

I thought he handled himself very well in the first innings. Unfortunately, in the second innings, things didn't work out for him," Lara said.
