BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - Anguillan off-spinner Omari Banks will create history today when he becomes the first cricketer from the tiny Caribbean island of Anguilla to represent the West Indies in Test cricket.

Whereas Banks and fiery Barbadian fast bowler Tino Best will make their Test debut against Australia in the third Test at Kensington Oval, the experienced Mervyn Dillon and 21-year-old middle order Marlon Samuels have been dropped from the side.

West Indies will also be without regular wicketkeeper Ridlley Jacobs, who failed a fitness test yesterday. Jacobs had also missed the second Test after injuring his leg while batting in the first Test in Guyana.

It means the diminutive 20-year-old Carlton Baugh gets another chance to showcase his wicket-keeping skills after making his debut in the Trinidad and Tobago second Test, which the West Indies lost by 118 runs to trail Australia 0-2 in the four-match series.

After failing to play a specialist spinner in the first two Tests, the selectors have finally turned to the tall, lanky 20-year-old Banks, who captured 25 wickets at an average of 36.40 in seven Carib Beer Series matches this season.

Best, a skull-shaven pace bowler who is regarded as one of the region's fastest bowlers, will get a chance to wear his maiden Test cap before his Barbadian home fans.

The 21-year-old Best was the leading bowler in the Carib Beer Series, capturing 39 wickets at 18.25 runs apiece.

Dillon's dropping was forecast after he managed just five wickets in the first two Tests at 65.00 runs apiece. Overall, the 28-year-old Dillon has taken 117 wickets in 32 Tests at just under 32 runs for each success.

Samuels gifted his wicket in both innings of the first Test but rebounded to hit a classy 68 in the second Test and it was expected that he would have retained his place in the side.

His exclusion allows young Grenadian left-hander Devon Smith, who bagged a ‘pair’ in Trinidad and Tobago to have another chance to redeem himself in partnership with the recalled Chris Gayle while it means that Daren Ganga will remain at No.3 in the batting order.

The inclusion of Banks and Best means that the West Indies have made five changes to the 11 used in the last Test at the Queen's Park Oval with left-arm pacer Pedro Collins and all-rounder David Bernard also losing their places.

West Indies squad: Brian Lara (captain), Chris Gayle, Devon Smith, Daren Ganga, Ramnaresh Sarwan (vice-captain), Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Carlton Baugh, Vasbert Drakes, Omari Banks, Jermaine Lawson and Tino Best.
