Appointments to the Ethnic Relations Commissions have been completed and the nominees are scheduled to be sworn in on May 2 at the Office of the President.

This disclosure was made by the Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS), Dr. Roger Luncheon at his weekly news conference yesterday.

Dr. Luncheon observed that the appointments have “advanced far enough” to engage the President’s attention.

He said Cabinet has recognised and noted the role and contributions that have been made by the main opposition party, the People’s National Congress/Reform (PNC/R, to the issues relating to the appointment of the constitutional service commissions.

Parliament is to be convened sometime next week to deal with constitutional matters relating to the appointment of constitutional commissions.

Responding to whether the PNC/R would participate in the upcoming parliamentary sessions, the HPS said that its participation is desirable and necessary and the manner in which discussions between the party and government is going indicates that there is such a possibility. “The possibility is greater today,” he added.

He described the work between the two sides as promising and successful and observed that as soon as the issues prior to the boycott of Parliament as well as others are resolved most likely there would be a return by the PNC/R.

The late leader of the PNC/R, Mr. Desmond Hoyte, had put a pause on the dialogue between himself and President Bharrat Jagdeo citing non-implementation by the government of projects and decisions mutually agreed upon. Following the adoption of this stance the PNC/R initiated a boycott of the National Assembly, only briefly returning to debate a motion they submitted alleging that Guyana is in a crisis.

Leader of the PNC/R, Mr. Robert Corbin on his election to the leadership had expressed a willingness to engage in constructive discussions with President Bharrat Jagdeo.

Talks are currently ongoing between the two sides to finalise preparations for a meeting between the President and Mr. Corbin.
