THREE officials of USA Boxing will be officiating at the finals of the Carryl Golden Gloves boxing championships at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, tonight.

The officials will be here to jump-start a possible annual joint exchange between the Upper Demerara Amateur Boxing Association, headed by organiser Michael Carryl and amateur bodies in the USA.

However, Carryl told Chronicle Sport that there is one drawback and the two organisations would have to shift their focus.

“The programme was meant for the seniors, novices and open boxers and they did not enter the tournament. We will now have to see if we can work with the juniors,” Carryl disclosed.

Visiting officials Michael Rosario, Mercedes Rosario and Angel Villarreal should have assessed the level of boxing here to determine the category of USA boxers for the exchange.

In the first exchange the USA boxers will visit some time in June/July and the following year, local boxers will go up to the USA, continuing thus thereafter.

Michael Rosario is a vice-president of New York Metro, that area’s local boxing council, and chief official of the Easter Region of USA Boxing, the national governing body. His wife, Mercedes is a computer technician and certified clerk of USA Boxing.

Villareal is a certified AIBA official and is also the president of the Milwaukee local boxing council, an affiliate of USA Boxing.

Some eleven bouts are so far carded for tonight’s finals, with the possibility of two or three more bouts being added.

Judging from the opening night in Linden and the semifinals at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, last Saturday night, some exciting fights are in the making.

The fast-rising Andrew Murray Jnr of the Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) gym, will be on show, coming up against Shemrick Peters of One Mile Boxing Gym.

Other boxers on the card are Ray Sandiford (FYF), Kelice Ross (FYF), Edward Skeete (FYF), Sherwin Young (Harpy Eagles), Ron Collins (Harpy), Kevin Allicock (FYF), Kellon Peters (One Mile), Dexter Jordan (FYF), Rawle Joseph (Harpy), Michael Jordan (FYF), Dennis Thomas (Harpy), Owen Lord (One Mile), Quincy Craig (FYF), Quacy Miller (One Mile), Jermaine Gomez (FYF), Dexter Gonsalves (FYF), Simeon Hardy (FYF) and Harvey Mattis (One Mile).

Sponsors for the tournament are Everlast, the world famous boxing equipment giant, North American Airlines, Budget Car & Truck Rental and Travel Span.
