GUYANA’S middle-order batsman Narsingh Deonarine and Jamaican wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh Jnr dented Australia’s pride with a pulsating 221-run unfinished seventh-wicket partnership as the West Indies Carib Beer XI earned a creditable draw against the World Cup champions on the final day of their three-day match at the Everest Cricket Club ground yesterday.

Set the daunting task of scoring 442 for victory, after Australia were dismissed for 196 in the first session of play, the Carib Beer XI closed the day on 402 for six with Deonarine undefeated on 141 and Baugh, who has been included in the West Indies 14-man squad for the first Cable & Wireless Test, a swashbuckling 115 not out, both achieving their second first-class centuries.

Final scores in the three-day encounter were:

Australia 377 for three declared and 196; Carib Beer XI 132 and 402 for six.

Deonarine’s unbeaten knock followed his maiden ton against India A while Baugh scored his against Barbados, both at the Kensington Oval, Barbados, representing the West Indies B in this year’s inaugural Carib Beer Series tournament.

The two came together, just before tea, with defeat seemingly staring the Carib Beer XI at 180 for six after left-arm spinner Brad Hogg had engineered a middle-order collapse, bagging five for 50 in his first 14 overs.

The left-right combination proceeded to dominate the Australian spinners as Australian captain, Steve Waugh noticeably used his two main pacers, Jason Gillespie and Andy Bichel, very sparingly, the two sending down only 18 of the 81 overs bowled.

There was no respite for leg-spinner Stuart MacGill, who ended with one for 126 off 26 overs, while Hogg, who finished with five for 112, was punished for 72 in his last eight overs.

Unlike the first innings when the Carib Beer XI got off to a wretched start, openers Imran Jan and Devon Smith put together 59 for the first wicket with Smith, who had three consecutive ducks before yesterday, shaping well while Jan, who batted through the first innings, again showing good technique.

Smith started by straight-driving fast bowler Andy Bichel and pulling him for sweetly timed fours and on-driving pacer Ashley Noffke for another boundary while Jan joined the fray by turning Bichel through midwicket and smashing leg-spinner Stuart MacGill through the covers for boundaries.

Australia made the first breakthrough when Smith (37) was trapped lbw, sweeping at Hogg with the score on 59, his innings including four fours in 67 minutes.

At lunch, the Carib Beer XI were 64 for one with Jan on 21 and Deonarine four.

Deonarine was quickly into his strides after the interval, punching Hogg for consecutive fours through the covers and hitting him straight for six.

Noffke also came in for similar treatment from the Guyanese left-hander who struck him for three fours in one over.

The pair added 61 in 47 minutes for the second wicket before Jan was trapped lbw by Hogg for 44, which included four fours in 67 minutes off 54 balls at 120 for two.

Dwayne Bravo, who replaced the left-handed Jan, stroked Noffke for two exquisite fours but succumbed to a faster delivery from Hogg, bowled for 14 at 152 for three.

Hogg struck a double blow with the addition of 10 runs, first getting rid of skipper Sylvester Joseph, caught at short mid-wicket by Justin Langer for two while Aneil Kanhai, went caught at gully by Martin

Love for a first ball ‘duck’.

It was soon 180 for six when Omari Banks (six), again placed ahead of Baugh, edged MacGill to Matthew Hayden at 180 for six.

Baugh immediately showed signs of what was to come, opening his account with a four through mid-on off left-arm spinner Darren Lehmann and at tea was undefeated on eight while Deonarine was 73 not out.

Baugh went on the rampage after the interval, smashing MacGill at will to all parts of the ground, his efforts including a straight six and three consecutive fours while Deonarine raced into the nineties with two off-side boundaries off the same bowler.

Deonarine got to his hundred by glancing MacGill to fine leg for four and celebrated the milestone by clobbing the Australian leg-spinner down the ground for four.

The diminutive Baugh was soon to his half-century, which included nine fours and a six off just 48 balls in 65 minutes and continued his relentless attack, hoisting Hogg straight for his second six.

The little Jamaican then went into high gear, slamming Hogg for 14, including one six and two fours in the same over while another MacGill over yielded 17 runs.

Baugh eventually reached three figures with a lofted drive though mid-off off MacGill and gleefully celebrated by punching the air in delight.

When the 15 mandatory overs were completed, the partnership was worth 221 in 140 minutes, with Deonarine’s unbeaten knock including 20 fours in 255 minutes off 206 balls, while Baugh’s was laced with 17 fours and three sixes in 140 minutes off 109 balls.

Earlier, Australia, who resumed on 180 for eight, surprisingly extended their innings into the morning session before being dismissed for 196.

Martin Love, who was 55 not out, added four to his overnight score before he was bowled by fast bowler Adam Sanford with the score on 190.

The last wicket to fall was that of MacGill, bowled by off-spinner Omari Banks for 23 after resuming on 17.

Matthew Hayden, who batted at the unusual position of number 11, was left undefeated on two.

Sanford finished with three for 28 from nine overs, Banks three for 65 from 22.5 and Dave Mohamed, who did not bowl on the final day, two for 45 from 14.
