SEVERAL passengers were terrorised and robbed early yesterday morning when armed criminals attacked the minibus they were in as it was passing through the violence-prone East Coast Demerara village of Buxton.

Victims said the vehicle was heading for Georgetown when it stopped by the Hamilton gas station in Buxton around 06:30 hrs to pick up another passenger.

As the bus was about to move off, two "well dressed" men rushed up to the vehicle and demanded that the driver "stop the f...ing vehicle", they said.

The men then entered the vehicle, guns in hand, and instructed the driver to drive the vehicle into Company Road, heading south in Buxton, reports said.

Reports said the driver complied and while the bus was going down the road, other persons in the street surrounded the vehicle and further terrorised the passengers.

One bandit placed a gun to the head of one passenger who was robbed of cash and a gold chain.

In the ordeal that lasted between five and 10 minutes, other passengers were robbed, reports said.

An Army patrol arrived on the scene and fired a few shots in the air which sent the attackers scampering away, victims reported.

They said the soldiers escorted the minibus out of Buxton and to the Vigilance Police Station where a formal report was made.

Reports said the driver of the minibus lost some $13,500 and the conductor was relieved of $2,400 by the bandits.

Since last year, many vehicles have been attacked and passengers robbed while passing though Buxton, a community which law enforcement officials have described as a safe haven for criminals.

Yesterday's attack occurred in the vicinity of Company Road which is between Buxton Middle Walk and Brusche Dam where Army patrols are stationed in an effort to protect persons passing through the area.
