TWO queens were crowned Miss Guyana Phagwah 2003 on Saturday night in a controversial ending to the contest held by Asif Nawaz Promotions at Starlite Drive-in Cinema, Montrose, East Coast Demerara.

Jeneieve Gouveia, clad in a multi-coloured sari, was only into her reign for about 15 minutes when she was 'overthrown' by an announcement of a 'royal' mistake, much to the disapproval of some patrons.

The announcer said Naomi Singh, who had already taken off her red and gold sari and jewellery backstage, was the real winner.

The first queen was named after Chief Judge Andrea McAdam handed an envelope containing the results to host Phool Kumarie. That was, however, upturned when another announcer took to the stage to say that the promoters wished to advise Singh was the queen.

Gouveia's mother, who was among well-wishers taking photographs and enjoying the excitement of the moment with her daughter, took the crown, sash, bouquet and trophy and handed them back to the organisers.

Singh had to hastily re-wrap her sari to return to the stage where she had her turn posing for pictures as queen with a bouquet, the trophy and the crown.
