THE People's Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) has vehemently condemned what it described as the Opposition People's National Congress Reform (PNC/R) sponsored attempt to stop the proceedings of Parliament yesterday during the presentation of the National Budget by Finance Minister, Mr. Saisnarine Kowlessar.

In a statement, it said the assault on Parliament was yet another example of the PNC/R's determination to seize power and urged all freedom loving Guyanese to reject this latest attempt to derail democracy and the workings of Parliament.

"We especially condemn the hooliganism and vulgarity of the small gang, who were part of yesterday's failed protest march in Georgetown organised by the PNC/R and CNS 6 Justice For All Party, that attempted to subvert the democratic process of our nation, still striving to overcome the dictatorship of the PNC regimes of pre-1992.

"The behaviour of the small crowd was in the steep tradition of PNC terrorism and intimidation," the PPP/C charged.

"We move especially to condemn the behaviour of PNC/R Members of Parliament - Vincent Alexander, Jerome Khan, Abdul Kadir, Raphael Trotman and James McAllister who led the disruptive gangs through Police barriers. Further the conduct of MPs Abdul Kadir, Jerome Khan and Debra Backer and Vincent Alexander to invade the halls of Parliament with placards was not only disgraceful, but also criminal in nature," the PPP/C stated.

The party said it is not against peaceful protesting, noting that it protested peacefully for 28 years with dignity while the country was being raped and the people subjected to despicable brutality.

"But the PNC/R has consistently demonstrated that they are unwilling to behave in a decent manner and consistently demonstrate criminal and hooligan conduct," the party charged.

The PPP/C said yesterday's storming of Parliament raises doubts about the sincerity of the recent statements by Leader of the PNC/R, Mr. Robert Corbin about abandoning of extra-parliamentary and disruptive politics, especially when such behaviour comes at a time when representatives of the Government and the PNC/R were meeting to discuss parliamentary and constitutional issues.

The party is demanding an explanation from Mr. Corbin on where his party stands on these matters.

"We are saddened that PNC/R Members of Parliament again chose to use hooliganistic tactics to disrupt Parliament and carry out the avowed PNC/R position to make Guyana ungovernable," the PPP/C said, adding that the PNC/R Members of Parliament "continue to shamefully collect pay as Members of Parliament while being derelict in their duties of serving the people in Parliament."
