A TRINIDADIAN contractor attached to a Guyana Water Inc. (GWI) project on the East Coast Demerara, was yesterday kidnapped by a gang of 15 men, most of whom were armed, but was later released and was reportedly well, Police said.

According to the Police, the contractor and other employees were doing excavation works along the Buxton/Annandale Railway Embankment road when the gang abducted him and retreated into Buxton.

Several other workers were reportedly robbed of cash and jewellery and up to yesterday afternoon five official reports had been made to the Police.

The kidnapping took place at about 11:15 hrs, Police said in a press release.

GWI said the contractor is an employee of Universal Earth Movers/General Earth Movers Incorporated (UEM/GEM), a firm contracted to work with GWI on the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Water Improvement Project.

In a press release, it noted that kidnapping is a criminal offence and said the perpetrators of such crimes should be brought to justice.

Police were continuing investigations into the kidnapping but a source said they believe the same gang which hijacked a delivery vehicle in Buxton on Wednesday abducted the contractor.

A Duncan Shipping Company vehicle delivering barrels shipped from overseas was Wednesday attacked and robbed by about 15 men at Company Road, Buxton, Police said.

Some of the men were armed, Police said in a press release.

The gang stole six barrels and five boxes from the vehicle and robbed the driver of a cell phone and $18,000 in Guyana currency, the release said.

The driver was returning after delivering similar items at a home in Middle Walk, Buxton, when the gang forced the vehicle to stop by sitting on the road in its path, Police reported.

According to the release, the stolen items were intended for addresses at Nabaclis and Berbice.

The Police Force again cautioned drivers and other persons of the risk involved in venturing into Buxton/Friendship, especially south of the main road.
