THE Guyana Police Force (GPF) yesterday confirmed that Saudi Arabian-born national, Adnan G. El Shukrijumah, who the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) of the United States is seeking to locate and question in connection with possible threats against the U.S., was issued with a Guyana passport several years ago.

It said in a release that records have the man listed as Adnan Gulshair Mohamed Shukri Jumah and the holder of a Republic of Guyana passport, issued on June 4, 1999 (1999-06-04), in Washington, DC, by the Guyana Consulate.

Prior to that date, he was the holder of a passport which was issued in Guyana on June 4, 1984 (1984-06-04), the release added.

Police said his father is a Guyanese national by birth, but that Adnan Gulshair Mohamed Shukri Jumah, is a Saudi Arabian by birth, is categorised as a Guyanese by descent and is therefore eligible to be the holder of Guyana passports.

In addition, his father, two sisters and two brothers are also the holders of Guyana passports, Police said.

According to the release, efforts are being made by the GPF to address other aspects of the documents published on the Internet in relation to the case.

The FBI, in an alert published on its website, said it was seeking information on El Shukrijumah, 27, who uses a number of aliases, including Adnan G. El Shukri Jumah, Abu Arif, Ja'far Al-Tayer, Jaffar Al-Tayyar, Jafar Tayar and Jaafar Al-Tayyar, and is suspected of carrying a Guyana passport, among passports from other countries.

The suspect, said to be about 5-foot-4 and 132 pounds, though he may be heavier, has black hair, black eyes and a Mediterranean complexion, may be wearing a beard, and is possibly involved with al-Qaeda terrorist activities, according to the FBI.

If this is the case, the FBI warned that he may pose a serious threat to U.S. citizens and interests worldwide.

FBI Director, Robert S. Mueller III in a March 20 address on "Operation Liberty Shield", regarding the FBI's extraordinary measures to protect the American people in the midst of the conflict in Iraq had said "We are running down every lead, responding to every threat, coordinating with every partner, and doing our utmost to keep terrorists from striking back."
