THE $40M building to provide counselling services for Region Five (Mahaica/Berbice) and Region Six (East Berbice/Corentyne) residents will be opened soon, the Government Information Agency (GINA) has reported.

The building aback the Port Mourant Hospital Complex is a joint project between the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Labour, Human Services and Social Security.

The idea for the project stemmed from the high incidence of suicide in the Corentyne area, GINA said.

The two ministries have, however, considered expanding the counselling services to be provided to include other pressing issues such as HIV/AIDS, domestic violence and spousal abuse.

The project is solely funded by the New Building Society (NBS) Limited.

Social workers, probation officers and specialists will be the primary persons working at the institution. The NBS has also built housing facilities for a caretaker for the building.

The only need for the spanking building before the official opening is furniture and electricity, GINA said.

Construction began last July.

Minister of Labour Dale Bisnauth who recently visited the complex, said he was very pleased with the finished work and is excited about getting the project under way.

The contractor for the 80 feet by 80 feet structure was Guyadeen Construction Service.
