THE United States Embassy in Georgetown said yesterday that the reward offer published in local Sunday newspapers is in an effort to assist the law enforcement community in Guyana.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has offered G$2M for information leading to the arrest of the individual or individuals involved in the assassination of Deputy Head of Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), Mr Vibert Inniss.

Inniss, shot dead several months ago, at Buxton, East Coast Demerara, had featured in the investigations of headlines grabbing drug cases in the past.

A U.S. Embassy press release said persons with information are asked to call the toll free number 862-1USA, between the hours of 7.30 am and 4.30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The release said: "The U.S. Embassy considers this case extremely important in curbing the scourge of illegal drugs transshipping throughout the Caribbean."

"The mission of the DEA is to enforce the controlled substances laws and regulations of the United States and bring to the criminal justice system of the United States, or any other competent jurisdiction, those organizations and principal members of organizations involved in growing, manufacture, or distribution of controlled substances appearing in or destined for illicit traffic in the United States and to recommend and support non-enforcement programs aimed at reducing the availability of illicit substances on the domestic and international markets," the statement said.
