THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) says it is confident that Guyanese will frustrate any and all efforts to put Guyana back in the times of undemocratic rule, disunity and stagnation.

In a message on the sixth death anniversary of its General Secretary, the late President Cheddi Jagan, the party said its confidence is based on the example of Dr. Jagan’s guidance.

“We must work tirelessly to deepen and widen democracy which is indispensable for our socio-economic and cultural advance,” the message stated.

The party noted that Dr. Jagan dedicated almost his whole adult life to serving Guyanese and was the foremost champion of the cause of the oppressed and for promoting the interests of working people and other democratic forces in Guyana and worldwide.

One of the founders of the PPP, he led the party in the fight for universal adult suffrage , independence and democracy.

The party noted that even in the darkest periods of undemocratic rule, Dr. Jagan never lost faith in the collective intelligence of the Guyanese people and was always confident that the just struggle for freedom from colonialism and democracy would be successful.

“That leadership and optimism have been vindicated but attained after great efforts and sacrifices. Nowadays, these are again being threatened by those who benefited from the undemocratic past.

“Dr. Jagan was right in his numerous predictions that those who profited from the undemocratic period and the oppression of the working people would not give up voluntarily.

“To carry on in the glorious tradition of Cde. Cheddi is, in our time, to be united, be vigilant and continue the struggle to ensure those with suspect plans and designs do not succeed. We must not be forced backwards. We must continue to take steps forward,” the message urged.
