NEWLY-CROWNED Miss Guyana Universe 2003 Leanna Damond says she is enjoying her reign very much and told reporters yesterday that the experience continues to be exhilarating.

The 25-year-old Economics student is from New Amsterdam and residents there are throwing a grand motorcade for her today.

According to franchise holder Mr Odinga Lumumba, the activities are being organised by Berbice businessmen.

Leanna will leave Guyana in about a month for the United States where she will undergo training for the Miss Universe Pageant to be held in Panama in early June.

According to Lumumba there are big plans to put Leanna in the spotlight when she goes overseas.

Omarosa Stewart of Howard University's Communications Department will work with the queen to perfect her knowledge of current and world affairs as well as how to handle the media, he said.

Local "stalwarts" will also be asked to help Leanna with personal development.

According to overseas-based Guyanese trainer, Mr. Robert Dover he has to work with Leanna on stage presence and 'the walk'.

"She will also have to hit the gym. Not that she needs it desperately, but if you are to look good, your body must be toned," he said.

Designer, Ms. Michelle Cole said a unique wardrobe will be created for Leanna, in the sense that all her outfits must reflect "Guyana".

For the national costume, local and overseas designers are being asked to submit their designs and compete for the chance to let the queen wear their costume in Panama.

"She is competitive, but even if she isn't, we will make Leanna competitive at Miss Universe", Lumumba said.

Meanwhile, Lumumba is talking to BWIA, North American Airlines and Universal Airlines to arrange a charter flight to Panama for Guyanese who want to make the trip and fly the national flag in support of Guyana's delegate at the pageant. (NEIL MARKS)
