THE organisers of the Miss Guyana Universe 2003 Pageant are promising an entertainment-packed three hours at the National Cultural Centre, Georgetown, tonight, with two dozen young ladies competing for the chance to represent Guyana at Miss Universe in Panama this May.

Out of the 24, Marita Persaud, Analisa Reynolds, Leanna Damond, Latoya Perreira and Sheldyne Ferreira might very well make the top five cut.

The girls will first perform in an introductory Carnival-like spectacle that will involve the National School of Dance, the National Dance Company and comedian Henry Rodney, franchise holder, Mr. Odinga Lumumba said yesterday.

"It's going to be 10 minutes of high-energy dancing to soca, calypso, and folk music and then the girls will join the party from the three aisles of the Cultural Centre", Coordinator Robert Dover told the Chronicle.

With entertainment in between, the girls will appear in their swimsuits and later on, the evening gown competition will be held.

Points from the already concluded interview segment and the swimsuit competition will be added to those of the evening gown competition to determine the top 10 contestants.

With the likely top five contenders mentioned above, those who seem destined for a spot in the top 10 are Ulex Atwell, Deslyn Jack, Jacqueline DeFreitas, Denise Rodrigues and Vanessa Tacooram.

However, if Tacooram is to make it into the top 10, she will definitely have to make sure that her weight is no barrier tonight and put on something that will bring out her true self and draw the attention of the judges. She performed well in the interview segment but failed to match up in the swimsuit competition.

Of the likely top five, Marita Persaud is the favourite for the crown. She is pretty, full of confidence and knows to charm her way through interviews. Her only problem is her height.

Analisa Reynolds and Leanna Damond are taller and both also did creditably in the concluded competitions.

Latoya Perreira dazzles when on stage, but gets a bit too emphatic when answering questions. If she makes it into the top 10, Perreira will have to be herself to get through fine in the interview segment, which will determine who moves into the top five.

Even though her childish innocence is a likeable asset, Sheldyne Ferreira will have to overcome this and speak clearly for the judges.

And though the front-runners are obvious, those left out might very well make it into the top 10.

A nice surprise will be Tarmattie Bishun. She performed admirably in the interview segment and even more so during the swimsuit competition.

Once the top 10 are selected, the delegates will be asked questions on their platforms and this will determine the top five.

Announcer/producer at GBC, Wanita Huburn and veteran broadcaster, Bobby Vieira will be conducting the interview session.

Miss Guyana Universe 2002, Mia Rahaman's successor will receive $200,000 cash and prizes worth $800,000.

Some of the other entertainers of the night will be local reggae band First Born and an Indian dance troupe.

The main entertainer will be Jamaican reggae singer Richie Stevens, who will sing numbers from his upcoming album `Covers for Lovers'. - (NEIL MARKS)
