WHEN Guyana’s second world champion, Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite, defends the World Boxing Council cruiserweight title tonight, he steps into the ring with wishes for a win from the Director of Sport.

Braithwaite will be facing challenger Ravea Springs in the Miccosukee Casino in Miami, Florida, in the main bout to be broadcast on ESPN2.

On the same card too, another Guyanese will be fighting in his fourth professional bout. He is Randy Tappin who is undefeated in three fights. He will come up against Dillet Frederick who goes into the ring with three wins and two draws. There will be no live television for this bout.

The National Sports Commission officer, Neil Kumar, dispatched a message to Sportsman-of-the-Year Braithwaite in which he also congratulated the world champion on winning Guyana’s highest sport award.

“Wayne, the entire nation will be looking and rooting for you tonight and we are confident that you will dispatch the challenger Ravea Springs,” Kumar said.

Kumar said that the nation is also confident that trainer Colin Morgan has been able to prepare Braithwaite for the win.

“Your hard-won crown was a victory for all Guyanese and the poorer nations in this world,” Kumar declared.

The government official noted that Braithwaite was a true patriot and would be wearing the National colours that would be “genuine” inspiration for him.

“To you our Golden Boy, we appreciate the thanks you have expressed to the Government of Guyana, the people of Plaisance and all your fans in Guyana,” Kumar said.

Braithwaite is undefeated in 18 professional appearances since 1997, 15 of them via the knockout route, with 13 coming consecutively.

Springs is ranked the number eight contender, with 25 wins in 27 ring dates, 19 won by knockouts. His last victory came last August, a unanimous decision over previously undefeated Kelvin Davis, a known power slugger.

The challenger is ranked the number nine contender for the World Boxing Association belt, number seven International Boxing Federation contender and number two contender for the World Boxing Organisation title.
