Children's costumes depict resources, cultural heritage, themes of unity

AS THE Children's Mashramani Costume Competition entered its third day yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Georgetown, the audience of schoolchildren, teachers and parents was again thrilled with the creative use of wires, brightly coloured fabrics, shiny spangles and other metallic materials in the costumes displayed.

Schoolchildren from Nursery to Secondary levels appeared in arrangements depicting various aspects of Guyana's natural resources, the nation's rich and interwoven cultural heritage and the overriding themes of national unity, love and harmony.

Categories in which the costumes were judged were 'Topical' and 'Fantasy', and participating schools included Precious Jewels Nursery, Turkeyen Nursery, Kingston Nursery, Thomas More Nursery, St Ambrose Nursery, St Margaret's Primary, St Stephen's Primary, Bel Air Primary, St Angela's Primary, Smith Memorial, Sacred Heart Primary, Charlestown Secondary, the Marian Academy, Craft Production and Design, St Joseph High and the Sophia Special School.

Schools which excelled in the Nursery Individual Fantasy category were: Sophia Nursery with a performance of "In The Heart of a Seed"; Kingston Nursery with "2003 Granny" and Precious Jewels Nursery, which gained the top position with a display of "The Colourful Garden Flowers of Unity".

Nursery schools excelling in the Topical Individual category were: J.E. Burnham, "Colourful Maid" and St Agnes' Nursery with "Peace, Love and Unity". First place went to Turkeyen Nursery with "The Fun Queen".

In the Five to Seven age group, schools with top performances were St Agnes' Primary, Green Acres Primary, and Thomas More Primary.

St Ambrose Primary, Smith Memorial, Sacred Heart Primary and Mae's Under 12 were among the winners in the11 to13 age group.

St Joseph High, Sophia Special and Craft Production and Design were the schools carting off prizes in the 14 to 17 age category.

Other winning entries in yesterday's competition were "Mash Flair", "Soldier" and "Queen of Gold". (SHAWNEL CUDJOE)
