THE three men held by an Army patrol at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara early last month allegedly with a large cache of arms and ammunition, appeared yesterday before Magistrate Jerrick Stephney at the Sparendaam Court, also on the East Coast.

Shaheed Khan, 30, of Rotunda Place, D'Aguiar Park; Haroon Yahya, 29, of 80 Good Hope; and Policeman Sean Belfield of Good Hope Housing Scheme were arrested on the night of December 4, 2002 after an Army patrol intercepted a vehicle, GHH 7539, at Good Hope reportedly with a large cache of arms and ammunition.

The Army said it also found in the blue Ford open-back pick-up, a laptop computer capable of intercepting cellular calls, a plan of the city, at least two M16 assault rifles fitted with telescopic lenses, two Glock pistols and other hand guns, two bulletproof vests, a 12-guage pump rifle, an Uzi submachine gun, two camouflage caps and two helmets and a large quantity of varying calibre ammunition.

The pick-up used by the men was also reportedly fitted with half-inch thick bulletproof windows.

The men were charged with possession of firearms and ammunition and were each placed on $500,000 bail.

They are due back in court on January 27.
