THE National Sports Commission (NSC) has expressed dismay at the brutal killing of boxing referee, Harold Duncan, who was fatally shot last Saturday, pointing out that the boxing fraternity “will miss this rare breed of personality”.

The text of the NSC release reads:

The National Sports Commission wishes to express its dismay at the brutal killing of boxing referee Harold Duncan who was gunned down last Saturday at his Agricola home by unknown criminals.

Duncan, who refereed his last bout on Boxing Night when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control held its annual card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, was well respected throughout the boxing fraternity.

Even though he was a very humble person, Harold gained the respect of all boxers emerging out of Guyana with his stern but professional approach in the ring.

Officiating in approximately 123 fights, Harold would have had the distinction of refereeing bouts that involved most of Guyana’s world champions and other high class boxers, including Wayne ‘Big Truck’ Braithwaite, Andrew ‘Sixhead’ Lewis, ‘Vicious’ Vivian Harris and Gary ‘Acid’ St. Clair.

A soldier by profession for 24 years, his last stint in this field was with the Coast Guard, before he left in 1995 to join the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), when the body was implemented.

The boxing fraternity will miss this rare breed of personality, for he was dedicated, dependable, respected and always willing to lend a helping hand.

Condolences are extended to his wife and family, relatives and close friends.

May his soul rest in peace.
